Letter From Wang Laoshi

We, together.

Hello, everyone

As your classmate Joy Xie notes in her video, "sometimes the problem isn’t as simple as 1+1=2, sometimes one plus one is simply one," “one” that is unique. How do your dual cultural backgrounds shape or influence you as a person? When you were young, you probably didn't want to be different. But how about now? Do you still want to be different or rather want to be like everyone else?

The colour red and blue together makes purple. You, too, are given the choice and power to create your own unique color and how you wish to live your life meaningfully, and it’s up to you to find your own shade of purple.

In the past semester, you have not only had the opportunity to learn who you are as a Mandarin/Cantonese-speaking Canadian, but also to explore your intercultural backgrounds. Laoshi believes that learning should always be for your own curiosity and pleasure. We thank you for the tremendous efforts that you have put toward getting to know yourself, to understand your family, and to support friends who may or may not share a similar background.

We, together, hope that your future endeavour of self-discovery will be one accompanied and supported by your dear friends, and one that will be cherished throughout your pursuit of knowledge.
